Lesson 5 | Background Foundations: Sky, Ocean, and Rocks
Let’s take on the background in this lesson! The background is an excellent place to loosen up and play—work thicker, build up some textures, and experiment with your paint. Since the background serves as a secondary element, there’s less at stake and less pressure, allowing you to let the process flow freely.
Backgrounds in pictures are often slightly blurred, helping to focus our eye on the central figure: in this case, the hand and the lolly. Let’s keep it dynamic and create a harmonious setting for your subject. Allowing the colours to be mixed and let the paint flow as freely as possible.

Materials Needed
Cooler colours
Bigger brushes
Warm colour for the rocks
Full workstation setup
Follow Lesson 5
It’s almost time to move onto the foreground. Your background is in and I hope you enjoyed the experience of painting a little more intentionally, moving towards resolving the background and recreating this Cape Town scene. Happy days!
